The Airbus Military C295 deploys its first torpedo

May 13, 2010

The C295 Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) has performed its first torpedo launch, marking a key development milestone for the tactical transport’s anti-submarine version.

This latest activity also underscores the high mission flexibility of Airbus Military’s C295, which is being proposed for Canada’s demanding Fixed Wing Search and Rescue replacement program.

With a flight endurance of more than 11 hours, the C295 MPA is utilized for a wide range of mission types, including search and rescue; control of the Exclusive Economic Zone; law enforcement; marine pollution detection; and defence. Its C295 platform offers high manoeuvrability and excellent qualities for low-altitude flying, and has been tested in all aerial deployment types.

For anti-submarine operations, the C295 MPA is equipped with two under-wing pylons for installation of torpedoes and other external loads. It also incorporates a Stores Management System – which is integrated with the Fully Integrated Tactical System (FITS) – to control deployment of sonobuoys for submarine detection and the launch of torpedoes.

Derived from Airbus Military’s proven CN235 transport, the C295 is the only aircraft that meets or exceeds operational requirements recommended by the National Research Council for Canada’s next generation SAR aircraft.

The C295 is a perfect complement to larger aircraft such as the C-130 Hercules and P-3 Orion. Its lower acquisition and operating costs allow for more flexible deployments in place of and alongside these airlifter types. In addition, the C295 is designed to operate from remote airfields that larger, four-engine aircraft cannot – with the ability to take off/land on short and unpaved terrains, and fly at low altitudes.

A total of 82 C295s have been sold to 12 operators to date, while nine countries have contracted for 47 CN235/C295 MPAs – demonstrating the capabilities and effectiveness of Airbus Military platforms for maritime patrol missions worldwide.
