The Chilean Navy receives its first C295 Maritime Patrol Aircraft

May 10, 2010

Airbus Military has delivered its initial C295 for operation by Chile, expanding the list of nations to enhance their aircraft fleets with this proven multi-mission tactical transport.

The delivery ceremony, which took place April 30 at the air base “Vina del Mar," marked an important first step in Chile’s fleet modernization process. The country will receive two additional C295s as part of an order which also includes five options.

To be operated by the Chilean Navy, these C295s are to provide the strategic and operational capabilities to fulfil its maritime surveillance, transport and antisubmarine needs.

Chile’s initial C295 is equipped with the Airbus Military-developed Fully Integrated Tactical System (FITS), which allows for optimum surveillance, Exclusive Economic Zone control, and search and rescue activities for its navy.

A repeat customer for Airbus Military-built products, the current Chilean fleet also includes 13 C212s and three CN235 aircraft – on which the C295 is based – which are in service with the country’s army, navy and air force.

The C295 is being proposed for Canada’s demanding Fixed Wing Search and Rescue replacement program. Operated in SAR and maritime patrol worldwide, the C295 is the only aircraft that meets or exceeds the operational requirements recommended by the National Research Council for Canada’s next generation SAR aircraft.

Approximately 20 per cent of each C295 is of Canadian content, providing a key role for Canada’s technology and manufacturing base in the aircraft’s international success.
